Last class Jesse Miller was our guest speaker. He provides social media education for businesses and schools. He got me thinking about what I would define as positive and negative social media content. Questions about my role of social media use as an educator arose. How can I support students to develop an understanding of appropriate dialogue and content sharing? Students do not seem to realizes what their own actions online can cause. The reality of the future has not set in yet. In order to teach and promote media literacy in school, I have to become more media literate. We as teachers need to know when to put our phones down. Moreover, I came to realize that for some students in school, social media is the only way they can get attention; their social circumstances might only allow for this kind of attention.
